Although our project is now complete our support for Lukla school will be ongoing through our teacher sponsorship and student scholarship schemes.
Our initial project was in the village of Lukla, Solu Khumbu. This is the home village of one of the Trustees of the charity, Dawa Geljen Sherpa. Initially we looked at building a brand new school in the village, however following an assessment visit in November 2008 it was clear that the costs of this would be significant. The Trustees felt that we could make a difference if we agreed to the following plans:
- Build an additional two room extension to the existing primary school.
- Equip both classrooms with furnishings and provide computers for use in the ‘IT’ room.
- Fund the salaries for two additional teachers, initially for three years.
Plans were received and a budget agreed with the local builders. It was estimated that this project would cost approximately £20,000 but came in under budget at around 15,000. This included material, labour, transportation costs, the computers and a small amount for teachers salaries, most of which have been paid for through our teacher sponsorship initiative. The new building was formally opened in an opening ceremony on November 1st, 2009.
