Our next project was referred to us by the ‘Australian Himalayan Foundation’ who in response to a petition from the Sotang community forwarded it to us.
We are raising funds - $56,600 in total - to rebuild the Shree Bakhapalam Lower Secondary School in the region of Sotang. Bakhapalam is located in the Solukhumbu district of Nepal. Its population is about 1500 and there are about 310 students at the school. It is 3 day walk southeast of Lukla, the gateway to the Everest region and 2 day walk north east of Paphlu. It is quite remote and totally off the tourist trail.
The Sotang community have requested a new school with 8 classrooms and 3 toilets. The existing school will be used as a Nursery/ Preschool facility and Community Centre to enable older children to attend school rather than having to care for younger siblings and elderly relatives.
Currently there are 7 classes and the school has only operated from Year 1 - Year 7 or up to Lower Secondary level. The Sotang/Bakhapalam community would now like to provide education up to and including Year 10. At the moment there is an average of 45 students in each class. The classrooms are in extremely poor condition as you can see……
